Professional Cleaning Fort Wayne IN

Dental assistant cleans a patient's teeth at Summit Dental Group in Fort Wayne, INYou should brush and floss your teeth daily at home, but this is not always enough to keep them healthy in the long term. You will still need to visit our providers at Summit Dental Group to get essential cleanings. Without a regular cleaning, you could put yourself at risk for enamel decay and other health conditions. Our professionals offer thorough cleaning to ensure your teeth stay strong.

The Importance of Cleanings

Even if you brush and floss regularly, you will still need to receive our cleaning service at least twice per year. Our highly trained professionals are able to provide a thorough cleaning that you would not be able to do at home. Though you should still brush and floss, a professional cleaning is the best way to make sure all of the plaque and tartar is removed. If you have plaque and tartar build-up it can cause bad breath, and you could be at risk for various health conditions such as gingivitis, cavities.

Scaling

When your cleaning begins, our dental hygienist will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline. This item has a pointed tip that lets the dental hygienist pull plaque and tartar from the teeth. They will also use a small mirror to guide them. During this step, you may hear a "scraping" sound as the scaler brushes along your teeth, but this is normal. Your teeth are very strong and you have nothing to worry about during your cleaning.

Brushing and Flossing

After our dental hygienist finishes scaling your teeth, they will then brush your teeth using an electric toothbrush. This is a circular brush that is designed in a way to allow it to brush each tooth individually. This ensures that they each receive a good cleaning and that nothing is missed. We use a gritty toothpaste that has a similar smell and taste to the ones you would use at home. The gritty texture helps to scrub the teeth and remove any debris left over after scaling. This should be done every six months. Our dental hygienist will rinse your teeth once the toothpaste is applied to each one.

After brushing, our dental hygienist will then floss your teeth to make sure the area in between them is clean as well. This floss is similar to what you would use at home. Once this is finished, you will then be able to rinse your mouth with water.

Exam

For the final part of your cleaning appointment, your dentist will meet with you to examine your teeth and mouth. At this time, your dentist may revisit some parts of the cleaning to be sure that all debris and bacteria has been removed. Once that is finished, we will then exam your teeth for any cavities or other concerns. Your dentist will also talk to you at this time to explain any concerns they have and give you instructions on how to continue caring for your teeth at home.
