Can Dental Issues Cause Headaches?

Can Dental Issues Cause Headaches? For most individuals that experience mild headaches and migraines, the source of this pain is usually related to the development or presence of a dental issue. However, most people are unaware that various dental problems and conditions of oral health can cause headaches. Below are some common dental problems that are known to be the causes of painful headaches among many people

Bad Bite

Bad bites occur due to misaligned, loose, or missing teeth, and this causes the jaw muscles to develop muscle strain since they work harder than usual, resulting in constant restrictions in bringing the teeth together as well as problems in swallowing and keeping the mouth shut. Additionally, overworking the jaw muscles causes tensions that release excess force and energy that brings about headaches.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding occurs due to stress or teeth misalignment. This misalignment causes muscle and gum inflammation that causes painful headaches. Signs of teeth grinding include jaw pain and constant clicking when opening the mouth. Headaches resulting from teeth grinding occur from the temples or behind the eyes, and in some cases, they can cause eyesight problems if not treated.

Bruxism

Primarily bruxism causes fractured and broken teeth that are painfully sensitive. In many cases, the teeth' sensitivity results in sharp, painful headaches, especially when an individual drinks or eats hot or cold substances.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the most common dental problem and a leading cause of headaches. In most cases, the patient believes they are suffering from head pain, but it's usually oral health issues. If tooth decay is not treated, it can cause painful head pain patterns that can cause partial blindness.

In conclusion, a patient needs to seek medical attention to identify the source of the headaches. Consistent dental checkups will help to know if the start of the pain is a result of dental issues, enabling the patient to correct the problem with simple dental procedures.
