Certain genetic disorders, environmental factors, and incidents can lead to misaligned or crooked teeth. Crooked or misaligned teeth can cause difficulty in biting and eating food. It can also make people more prone to oral diseases and give them an unusual smile.
To straighten a person's crooked teeth and align their upper and lower teeth, orthodontists may recommend getting dental braces. Dental braces are also used to improve a person's smile and to reduce strain on temporomandibular joints.
Dental braces are a set of devices or appliances that are used to exert pressure on the jaw bone and teeth so that teeth can naturally move and come to their proper position. The amazing thing about our teeth is that they can move to their correct position at any age. Therefore, there is no age limit for getting dental braces.
The different types of dental braces that orthodontists place on their patients' teeth are:
Traditional Braces
Traditional braces consist of metal wires and brackets. The metal wire is tightly wrapped around your teeth, and brackets are used to hold the wire in place. The tight wrapping of metal wires exerts pressure on your jawbones and teeth, bringing the teeth together and reducing imperfections like crooked teeth, tooth gaps, and misalignment. Some traditional braces also have metal ties or rubber bands that link the brackets to the metal wire that has been wrapped around your teeth.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are a lot like traditional braces, but the main distinguishing feature is between the types of brackets used to hold the metal wires in place. In the ceramic braces, the brackets are made from tooth-colored ceramic so that it's not as visible as traditional braces. Sometimes, the brackets are also made with clear materials like transparent rubbers or plastics to improve the aesthetic.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are the ones in which the brackets are attached to the back of our teeth. Because our tongue constantly rubs against these brackets when we speak or eat, they have been given the name, lingual brackets. Lingual braces are for those people who are very conscious about their smile and do not want the people to know that they are wearing braces. Having the brackets at the back of the teeth makes the thin metal wire hardly visible at the front of the teeth.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are also known as invisible braces. Clear aligners are basically transparent plastic trays that are placed on the front of your teeth and are fitted tightly to exert pressure on your teeth. The constant pressure gradually aligns the teeth and improves your smile. The amazing part about clear aligners is that they are removable, and you should remove them every time you eat or brush your teeth. However, your orthodontist will recommend that you keep them on for 22 hours every day and wear them to bed.
