Tooth decay is a condition that affects the enamel and the tooth's surface. As the condition progresses, it can affect the deeper layers of the tooth, leading to severe teeth or mouth issues. The decay can occur at different degrees of severity. It can range from constantly wearing off of the enamel to pain within the tooth's pulp. During the early stages, you may not feel the symptoms, but as the decay advances, you can experience signs such as tooth sensitivity to cold, hot, and sugary foods, constant tooth pain, difficulty chewing and biting food, and bad breath. Also, food trapping in the teeth more frequently can be a sign of tooth decay.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Poor Oral Hygiene HabitsAllowing food particles to remain at the surface of the teeth can be a source of damage to the enamel. When the food particles, saliva, and bacteria mix, they form plaque. The acid in the plaque destroys the enamel, making holes and cavities. Luckily, you can prevent tooth decay by brushing your teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled brush and fluoridated toothpaste.
Poor DietEating foods that are high in sugar and starches is a leading cause of tooth decay. When the bacteria in the mouth consume the carbohydrates, they produce acid. The acid softens and breaks down the enamel, causing tooth decay.
Dry MouthDehydration of the mouth can hinder the breakdown of food particles. Also, it acts as a good site for plaque and acids, the leading causes of tooth day. Due to this, it is good to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. This keeps the mouth moist, which helps to wash food particles.
The best way to manage and treat tooth decay is by consulting a dentist. Depending on the severity of the tooth decay, the dentist might recommend tooth extraction, root canal, fillings, or fluoride treatment.
